Mr. Maginnis’
Califon School Physical Education Grading Policy
Grades 5-8
The goal of the physical education program is to develop citizens who are both health-literate and physically educated. Students in grades 5-8 are required (due to health and safety reasons) to wear sneakers for each physical education class.
Grading for physical education class each marking period will be based on one hundred points. The grading scale is consistent with school guidelines:
A-90-100%
B-80-89%
C-70-79%
D-60-69%
F-59 % or less.
Evaluation for physical education grades will be based upon three domains. The Affective (attitudes, relations and sportsmanship), Cognitive (knowledge and concepts) and Psychomotor (skill).
Affective: worth 60%
· Affective includes effort, sportsmanship, behavior, attitude,
and level of participation during an activity.
· Affective consequences may include loss of five points per class session, a time out, being asked to go to the main office.
Cognitive: worth 20%
· Cognitive includes student’s knowledge and concepts of different physical education activities. Students will be graded on a pass or fail grading system (65 or higher is passing).
· If a student fails an assessment (64 or lower), his/her grade will be lowered by 10 points, for a maximum of twenty points.
Psychomotor: worth 20%
· Psychomotor includes assessment of student’s skills during physical education activities.
· Testing can include demonstration of skills or teacher observation.
· If a student fails an assessment (64 or lower), his/her grade will be lowered by 10 points, for a maximum of twenty points.
Preparation for Class:
· No Shoes/Sneakers, No Phys Ed Class for the day!!!
· If a student does not wear sneakers for class they will stay with the class but sit out during the activities for the day.
· Sneakers worn to school are acceptable for physical education class.
· No:
· Boots
· Uggs
· Sandals
· Flip Flops
· Etc.
· The teacher will make the final decision on whether the appropriate foot wear is being worn.
· Students who do not wear sneakers for Phys Ed class two times will lose 5 points off of their Marking Period Grade.
· This is a continuing policy so if a student were to forget to wear sneakers 4 times they would receive 10 points off of their Marking Period grade and so on.
Medical Excuses:
A student who is well enough to come to school is expected to be well enough to participate, to the best of their ability that day, in physical education class. Written excuses by a physician, physical therapist, athletic trainer, and/or non-physician, such as chiropractor, will be honored with no point loss from the student’s grade.
· Medical excuses for less than one week: Less than one week must be approved by the school nurse. The school nurse will determine whether the students will report to PE class or the nurses’ office. Pupils excused from physical education classes may not participate in extra-curricular activities that involve physical activity.
· Medical excuses for more than one week: Student must have a note or certification from his/her physician. The statement must indicate the date the student is to return to physical education without restrictions. If the student is allowed to participate with restrictions, the medical excuse must be explicit as to which activities the student can participate in and filed on the student’s health record in the nurse’s office. A student will not be allowed to participate in physical education class without a release date or note from a physician, physical therapist, athletic trainer, and/or non-physician such as a chiropractor.
· In all cases, the student will remain with the physical education class or be assigned to a supervised area. When a student is unable to participate for five weeks in the marking period, his/her grade will be a medical excuse.
Mr. Cutshaw’s 6-8th Grade Health Grading Policy
Health Grades are based on:
Responsibility, Participation/Effort, Behavior/Cooperation, and Content Knowledge
GRADING:
In health education classes, students will be graded daily on 10 points per day rubric using the criteria listed below. Grades 6-8 may also have written classroom assignments, short quizzes, or unit exams, which will be graded on a separate points basis and will be included as part of their Health grade.
HEALTH EDUCATION POINTS RUBRIC:
- Responsibility (is prepared with appropriate materials needed for health class and is not tardy) 1 Point
- Participation/Effort (actively participates in class discussions, group activities and completes in-class assignments (do-now’s)/written assignments/tests with effort) 1 Point
- Behavior/Cooperation (follows class rules; listens and follows directions) 1 Point
- Content Knowledge (demonstrates a basic knowledge of health concepts being taught) 1 Point
GRADES 6-8:
A+ = (99-100% and above)
A = (93-98%)

C- = (70-72%)
D+ = (69%)
D = (63-68%)
D- = (60-62%)
F = (59% and below)
