May 6 - 10:
6th, 7th, & 8th Grade: There was no class this week due to NJSLA testing.
6th Grade Study Skills: This week the class continued learning about how to effectively work with their teachers and peers. They began to look at strategies to help them work collaboratively with their classmates.
April Update:
6th Grade: The class started off the month by finishing up the chapter on dividing with fractions. After taking the assessment on dividing with fractions, the class worked on a chapter about gathering, graphing, and analyzing data. In addition, data was analyzed to determine if patterns existed and if so what the pattern was present. Once returning from spring break, the class moved to the next chapter and began studying how to convert units within the customary and metric system.
7th Grade: The 7th grade class started off April by finishing up their study of solving equations. After finishing their assessment of this module, they moved to their next unit and began working on geometry skills. They kicked off the geometry unit by looking at the relationships within scale drawings and how to find real measurements by using the information provided in the scale drawings. Then they started looking at relationships present in the angles created by intersecting lines. After wrapping up that module, the students then moved to their next section which was on learning about how to find the circumference and area of circles. This then led them to work on finding the area of composite shapes, surface area, and volume.
8th Grade: This month the class started out by wrapping up their unit on solving systems of equations by taking their module assessment. Then the focus of the class shifted to their next unit which was on transformational geometry. This unit started off by looking at transformations and their impact on the size, shape, and orientation of figures. The main focus was on translations, reflections, and rotations. From there the students began looking at angle relationships that are present when a set of parallel lines is intersected by a transversal. The were able to use these relationships to determine missing angle measurements and identify congruent angles. The class wrapped up the month by learning about angle theorems in triangles, volume of 3-D shapes, and the Pythagorean Theorem.
6th Grade Study Skills: During this month, the main focus was on communication and how to be better at holding conversations. The students learned tips about how to "be here now" when participating in conversations and actively listen to the people with whom they are talking. From there the class moved to the next section about what kinds of strategies they may use in classes to help them become better listeners. They worked together to identify things the help them do well with listening in class and then came up with a list of things that impede their ability to listen during classes. Once talking about how these items impact their learning, the students began to learn about strategies to help them improve upon their listening. In addition, they spent time learning about why it is important for them to work with their teachers and they were able to role play some situations where they showed a good and bad version of the student and teacher interaction.
I'm looking forward to working with your children and another great year! Feel free to contact me at anytime during the year at mheyduke@califonschool.org or (908) 832-2828 ext. 217.
