We are currently developing our After School Academy. We will slowly be introducing a few after school opportunities for our students over the course of the school year. There will be a small fee of $25.00 per club for our teacher-led clubs. Although our Science Explorers did not get started in October, I will pursue that sometime after the holiday. I think everybody, including our teachers, is acclimating themselves to the school year and the busy schedule that comes with it. Look for more info to follow.
I am currently pursuing a few evening community school events that will occur this year. Two of these will have a STEM slant and the other will be a literary evening in conjunction with Read Across America in March.
Teachers are currently working on setting individual student learning goals for your children. They will discuss these with you in greater detail at conferences in the beginning of November. In March, you will meet again with your child’s teacher(s) to discuss the progress made and the challenges encountered during the year.
Our middle school students will soon be submitting some of their work into their electronic portfolios. We are excited that they will be able to showcase their work electronically as opposed to the traditional hard copy paper files. For parents of students in the preK-3 grades, you can continue to see some of the great activities, etc. in which your child participates through the Seesaw application. Students in grades 4 and 5 have joined this application, but their submissions will be more student directed in order to prepare them for the digital portfolio at the middle school level.
Our middle school community service class of 7th grade students recently sponsored a fundraiser for hurricane victims at the Califon Street fair and raised $600.00! The 6th and 8th grade students continued with this in-house on Friday, October 13th. All had a great time getting pied and over $230.00 was raised in this short half hour!
We recognized the state-wide celebration of “Week of Respect” the first week in October. Of course, my message to students is that this week should be recognized every day. Many character activities centered around our assembly with NED (Never give up, Encourage Others, and Do your best). Please visit the website www.thenedshow.com The teachers all incorporated character lessons from the NED Show website. Mr. Cutshaw infused character lessons in his Health classes, and Mrs. Patterson and Mrs. Edsall did the same. Mrs. Kooger focused on Internet and computer safety with her middle school students. A huge thank you goes out to the parents who volunteered to sell yo-yos, as the proceeds allow another school to have the NED Show assembly free of charge.
The week culminated with a pep rally where I summed up the reason for wearing the different clothing on each day, and the staff played the middle school students in a game of volleyball. All had a great time!
